Sponsor Highlight: The Plain Chachalaca

Today we are highlighting A Life Sustained sponsor The Plain Chachalaca!
Using eco-friendly inks and cotton, Jenny hand-prints satirical designs on apparel for infants and home. In her words...

My name is Jenny. I am a mom to one and wife to one. We have two cats: Ruby and Mr. Van Zandt. My husband and I met in 5th grade, but we didn’t “get together” until we were both in graduate school. I’ve lived in California, Kansas, Texas, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, and Washington, DC. I love New England, but my husband won’t live north of the Mason-Dixon line. We like living in old houses.

Shortly after our daughter, Annie, was born my husband took a job down in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. In my opinion, there are only two good things about the Valley—birds and citrus. My shop is named after a bird I became acquainted with down there, the Plain Chachalaca. It is clamorous and very social and the Valley is the only place in the U.S. where you can find this avian marvel. It is my favorite bird of all time.

It was during my daughter’s first year that I began teaching myself how to screenprint. We now live in San Antonio in a teeny tiny bungalow. I do all my screenprinting on our back deck. I am a one-woman shop. I shamelessly dress Annie in my wares. I initially only did baby apparel, but have expanded to include dishtowels and produce bags for my non-breeder clientele. I like to work in series—obscure vegetables, internal organs, etc.

Likes: butter, MFK Fisher, vintage glassware, naps, the smell of skunk
Dislikes: incompetence, bottomfeeders, a dirty house

Tell use about your journey to becoming an artist/maker of things.

I was a ceramics major in college and then went on to get a MA in art education. I’ve worked in the arts my entire professional life and I’ve always “made” things. My foray into screenprinting took place after my daughter was born (she’ll be two in February).

When I was pregnant we decided not to find out if we were having a boy or a girl. We found gender-neutral options for baby apparel to be pretty limited. Once Annie was born I found shopping for her to be burdensome… I was sick of all the gender-specific frilly girly stuff (princesses and pink tulle explosions aren’t for us.) So I took matters into my own hands and started screenprinting onesies for her.

My designs are intended for both boys and girls alike. And I like to make things that get used and dirty. Given my station in life I simply can’t surround myself with objects too precious to use or wear.

What inspires you?

Humor. Food. Annie. Grant, my funny husband. My sister Mary.

Tell us about your favorite piece in your shop and describe your process in designing/making it.

Right now I am partial to my internal organs series—specifically the kidneys. For these designs I started with block prints and then scanned them. From there I burned the designs onto screens. Viola! My sister is diabetic and so I am working on creating a pancreas design just for her. It will be a limited edition.
