Sponsor Highlight: g.c.b. Fashionable Baby Clothing

Today we're highlighting A Life Sustained sponsor g.c.b. Fashionable Baby Clothing!

Erin upcycles material to make fashionable baby clothes with a conscience. In her words...

My name is Erin and I am a Michigan-based designer and seamstress. I have run my business, Edesigns, since 2005. Originally the business was focused on one-of-a-kind, custom made bridal gowns and accessories, however, when my son was born in 2010, I transitioned to a line of baby clothing. I wanted to be able to stay home and care for my son, without sacrificing my passion for sewing. Removing white satin from the equation seemed like a wise choice! I chose the name g.c.b. for the line to remind of why I had made the transition; the letters are my son’s initials!

Tell us about your journey to becoming an artist/maker of things. Who taught you how to sew?

I have been sewing as long as I can remember. My mom made a decent number of my clothes when I was a kid, and I remember always being fascinated by her sewing machine. It took a long time for me to develop my sewing skills (I’m sure there are still hundreds of pillows kicking around my parents house), but once I made the leap, I couldn't get enough. I actually got my degree in apparel and textile design.

What inspires you?

Growing up in Michigan, I've always been an outdoors kind of girl. The changes of season and the interplay of colors between the trees, the sky and the ground have always been huge sources of inspiration for me. When deciding on my palettes, I nearly always look to nature for inspiration.

I’m also greatly inspired by WWII era pop art. Botanical work, pinup art, the vintage cowboy prints little boy’s pajamas used to be made out of. The campier the better. Especially for children’s clothing, I think a sense of humor is important. Little ones are so full of joy and mischief, I think it’s a shame to not to celebrate that.

Why is it important to you to use sustainable and upcycled materials in your work?

The saying goes “The recession won't be over until we raise a generation that knows how to live on what they've got”. I think for a long time now we’ve all had a bad habit of constantly wanting more, more, more and taking what we have for granted. There are so many beautiful, well made textile pieces that are currently going to waste because something newer came on the scene.

One of the advantages I have in creating children’s clothing is that the individual pieces of the garments are quite small, so I am able to work around stains or tears that might have been making the fabric unusable for its original purpose. That gorgeous old table cloth that has a stain or burn in the middle might not be so great for the table anymore, but it makes beautiful dresses, pants or tops!

Tell us about your favorite piece in your shop and describe your process in designing/making it.

My favorite piece so far is my Australia Swing Dress (pictured above). It’s actually the first garment I made out of my current favorite material, vintage dish towels! I found the towel in an antique shop while shopping with my mother-in-law and just fell in love with the colors and the design. I knew it had to be turned into something that was loved again, it couldn’t just be left in that dusty shop! The dress design itself is a modification of an old pattern from 1983.

"One of the bridal gowns I made before switching over to baby clothing."
