A Life Sustained Sponsor: Too Sweets Patterns

Please welcome A Life Sustained sponsor Too Sweets Patterns!

Sophie designs patterns for adorable children's clothing, for sale as PDF dowloands in her shop, Too Sweets PDF Sewing Patterns. You can also read more about her on her blog Much Too Sweets.

In her words, "Hello! Thank you, thank you Courtney for inviting me to share my work on your fabulous blog. My name is Sophie, and I am the owner and designer behind Too Sweets PDF Sewing Patterns."

How did you begin designing children's clothing?

My mother had gifted me a beginner’s sewing machine when I was in high school. I used it briefly for one or two small projects but it mostly sat collecting dust in a closet (what a shame!). It wasn’t until after my first daughter was born that my passion for sewing really developed. I found that many of the clothing I was interested in purchasing for my daughter was either poorly made or completely overpriced (again, what a shame!). With this in mind, I pulled out ye’ old sewing machine (which has since been upgraded) and began designing and sewing her clothing.

What inspires you?

So many things. But I must say my biggest inspiration is my girls. Ava, my 2 1/2 year old, has such a vibrant personality, and my new little babe, Perla, is just so so sweet. (Plus, Ava has no problem letting me know what she does and doesn’t like, which is actually a big help.)

How long have you been sewing? Who taught you how?

I’ve been sewing for about a year and a half now (wow, it seems so much longer than that). I am self-taught! It’s really not as difficult as people make it out to be. I think what intimidates people most is all of the crazy-confusing terminology, which is why I strive to make my patterns as beginner-friendly as possible (meaning, little to none of those crazy-confusing terms). I also find I’m more of a visual learner, which is why I include step-by-step photos of the entire process.

Tell us about your favorite piece in your shop and describe your process in designing it.

Hmmm...my favorite piece? It changes often, but right now I’m really loving the Mini Maxi Dress. While I was pregnant with Perla (she was born this past June) I *lived* in maxi dresses; they were so incredibly comfortable and could easily be dressed up or down. I wanted one for Ava but hadn’t seen any in stores for girls her age (I’m not sure if they’re considered age appropriate or not? I don’t care, they’re adorable), so I came up with my own. I designed it with her rough and tumble play in mind, with an easy on-and-off, which is perfect while she learns to dress herself. She really loves it.

Sophie is generously offering to one A Life Sustained reader a 3 pattern bundle (your choice of three patterns from her shop)! To enter the random drawing to win, just leave a comment on this post.

  24. She gives me hope that I can actually use my sewing machine for good... ha ha! Instead of it just gathering dust most of the time! I have a little girl not too much younger than her Ava it looks like and have always wanted to make her clothes, but am just too chicken!
