A Life Sustained Sponsor: Omnatura

Please welcome A Life Sustained sponsor Omnatura!

Vivica combines her vision of modern design and aesthetic with the traditional craft of the artisan to create sustainable fashion objects found in her shop Omnatura. Working with salvaged bone and horn, different indigenous coconuts, many different kinds of seeds sustainably harvested by native Brazilian tribes, and semiprecious stones and geodes locally mined from small family-owned companies, all of Omnatura's offerings are one-of-a-kind, 100% organic, sustainable, and made with Fair Trade principles.

Omnatura has earned the Green America Business Seal of Approval! The seal is presented to businesses that go beyond product and service quality to set the highest standards in environmental sustainability and social justice, and work to solve, rather than create, environmental and social problems.

Tell us how you became an artist.

I am a graduate of the Pasadena Art Center for Design, and being a teenager in Milan in the fashion crazy 80's, I developed a strong sense of visual and personal style. In 2004, I was working as a professional photographer and living between Los Angeles and Salvador Bahia (Brasil), when I met artisan Selma Santos. She was making jewelry using local stones and seeds from Bahia and the amazons. Impressed by her talent and by the lack of financial resources, I started to collaborate with her on some pieces. That experience snowballed into a whole new world of very special talents and beautiful natural materials. That is how Omnatura was born.

Since the beginning I had a clear vision of sustainability and social commitment. Eventually Omnatura grew into a small company, run by me and a partner in the US, and collaborating with several artisans in Brasil. I would create designs or modernize the traditional ones, and we would make pieces together. I also taught them some business basics, and how to create a more viable form of revenue for themselves. To this day, Omnatura collaborates with 4 different artisans, and has grown into a very successful brand, especially in Brazil.

What inspires you?

My inspiration has always been Nature! Nature creates the most amazing materials, like semiprecious stones, and Brazil is extremely rich in its patrimony of such resources. Seeds, fibers, natural dyes, are all wonderful gifts form Mother Nature that will never cease to stimulate my creativity.

Why is it important to you to use sustainable materials in your work?

Another big source of inspiration is to create a natural sustainable product that will not create more pollution or toxic materials for the landfill. All of Omnatura products are non-toxic and ONLY made form pure natural materials. They are sustainable because they are harvested conscientiously and they are never worked in large industrial operations, always by small family based artisan companies, making them socially viable. I have a very strong awareness of they way I conduct myself as a human being on this planet that gives me life and sustenance. I am fully conscious of my responsibility to care for this beautiful world I am part of, and it is ONLY through my choices that I can make a difference for the future.

Tell us which piece is your favorite and tell us about its creation.

My favorite piece in the store is the piassava (coconut) diagonal ring. Not only it is a really cool design, it is also our most sustainable, ecological piece. You can watch a video of its making on our website.

The Cycle of Sustainability Symbol is Omnatura's mission statement. The torus knot shape represents the interconnectedness of all things. It is a reminder that we are part of the greater cycles of Nature and that our actions and decisions do matter in the big scheme of things. For Omnatura it signifies that whole process of product, from the materials to the labor, has been socially, ecologically, and sustainably minded.
