Please welcome A Life Sustained sponsor Three Guilds Farm Medicinals!
Katya and Ryan (and their dog Roo) run a 2-person herbal and mushroom farm in Maine, the bounty of which they have for sale in their Etsy shop. They offer small-batch, hand-created herb and mushroom healing products, all of which are either produced organically on their farm, ethically wild-harvested from the Maine forest or organically sourced from other farms.
|"Our dog Roo, shown in some of the photos is definitely the farm's MVP."|
In their words, "Our mission is to provide our customers with products with true healing properties, to nurture the body and the mind in a natural and effective way. We strive to create the most potent medicinals with the best quality ingredients so that you have the opportunity to be responsible for your own health using plant medicine. In addition, you are supporting a small farm dedicated to sustainability and ethical agriculture."
Tell us about how you started your farm.
We moved to Maine last December to start a small diversified farm with a focus on sustainable agriculture and permaculture practices. Ryan has been around small and large scale dairy operations in Wisconsin for most of his life. I developed an interest in farming while staying on a small farm when I attended Colby College. We met in Kentucky while working at a restaurant with a focus on local food where we started planning the beginnings of Three Guilds Farm. We feel a strong commitment to influence the world around us and the most effective way that is available to us is to become farmers. We are doing our best to become responsible stewards of the land and provide sustenance for ourselves and the local community.

Our main goal is to be a self-sustaining farm in a society that seems to favor large-scale agribusiness. We have been fortunate enough to find like-minded landowners and friends in the small island community of Georgetown, Maine who have given us the opportunity to bring a beautiful piece of property back into responsible agricultural use after over five decades of inactivity. We are striving to provide nearby counties with mushrooms, herbal teas, organic vegetables and other products. We are inspired by permaculture techniques including sheet mulching, companion planting and plant guilds as well as Eliot Coleman's writings on season extension in Maine. We are extremely fortunate to be a part of MOFGA's (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association) 2-year beginning farmer education JourneyPerson program, which has provided us with a wealth of resources.
What sorts of things does your farm produce?
Our small farm currently grows five varieties of mushrooms, which are grown on natural hardwood logs and will begin fruiting this fall. We also have a number of organic vegetable crops and are working on growing a variety of herbs for our tea and tincture production. We are located on 40 acres of mixed woodlot with 3 acres of orchard and meadow, which is slowly turning into vegetable plots. We also breed a pair of rabbits for meat as well as using their manure for effective organic compost. Currently, we are working on expanding our tea and tincture selection. This month will see the arrival of chickens! Our goals for next summer is to branch into beekeeping as well as raising a few goats and ducks. We are also looking forward to bringing 30 fifty-year-old apple trees back into production.
