A Life Sustained Sponsor: Natura Metallum

Please welcome A Life Sustained sponsor: Natura Metallum

Pamela captures natural forms and patterns in salvaged metal to create a line of unique sustainable jewelry. In her words, "The things that sing to me are created by nature, found in the wilderness and exist in quiet perfection. I also love the color white, cello and oboe music, maps, old cookbooks, foreign films, wild mushrooms, Flemish paintings, ledger paper, champagne and all things Danish."

You can read about her creative endeavors on her website (which she shares with her photographer husband) and see the beautiful pieces she has for sale in her two Etsy shops: Natura Metallum, where Earthy metal, natural sculptural forms and industrial materials combine in her sustainable jewelry line
and Ploust, which showcases her sea urchin pieces, molded and cast directly from shells that she collects from Pacific Ocean tide pools. All of her pieces are handmade and one of a kind.

What led you to become an artist?

My parents’ frugal sensibilities along with growing up immersed in nature seem the most influential factors in my becoming an artist. My childhood in the Northwoods of Wisconsin was short on “stuff” but flush with the bounty of the natural world – a great source for my entertainment, solace and joy. It was an everyday occurrence to make something out of nothing not just for practical reasons but to satisfy a need to explore and create.

I started making jewelry and sculpture a long time ago from found objects and scrap materials, mostly sheet metals and wire. This evolved into incorporating natural materials as well. After studying architecture and sculpture and now working in fine art conservation, I’m still exploring the possibilities of creating work that is unexpected and informed by the profusion of beauty I’ve found here at my home on the northern coast of California. The redwoods outside my little workspace seem a familiar and comforting environment in which to play and the Pacific Ocean never ceases to wow me. My greatest delight is finding intriguing materials that already exist in the world and creating something lovely that can be shared.

Pamela is generously offering to one winner the earrings pictured above; sparkling, feather-light aluminum folded and pounded to the form of a beautiful leaf, hanging from stainless steel hooks.

Just leave a comment on this post to be entered into the random drawing to win. Comments will be closed in the evening on Saturday, July 9 and announced in this post shortly thereafter.

And the winner is...Kaytee of Will Knit for Cake!
"Wow, those earrings are really unique! Love it. Thanks!"
